1. Delivery Is Not Rideshare With a Trunk
The apps blur together in the 1099 folder. But delivery taxes differ from rideshare taxes in three ways that matter: 1. **Tips are a bigger share of income** — often a quarter of a full-time courier's gross 2. **Miles are everything** — more driving per dollar of revenue than rideshare, which makes the mileage deduction proportionally larger 3. **No passenger supplies** — the deductibles shift to delivery gear: insulated bags, phone mounts for navigation This guide covers the DoorDash-specific picture; the rideshare version is Uber and Lyft deductions, ranked. The platform mechanics — 1099-K versus 1099-NEC, gross-versus-payout reconciliation, all income taxable with or without a form — are identical across apps, and covered in the general 1099 walkthrough.
2. What DoorDash Reports
Dashers generally receive a **1099-NEC** from DoorDash above the reporting threshold ($2,000 for payments made in 2026) — and potentially a **1099-K** if a payment platform processes the pay. Many part-time couriers receive nothing at all. The income is taxable anyway. Your weekly pay statements, downloadable from the app, are the source of truth. Save them monthly; they are the same statements that make reconciliation a ten-minute job in January.
3. The Deduction List, Delivery-Ranked
**1. Mileage — the whole game.** From order acceptance to drop-off, the miles are business miles at the 2026 rates (72.5¢ January–June, 76¢ July–December). Between-orders driving with the app on counts too. Home to your first hotspot generally does not. A courier running 25,000 delivery miles is deducting roughly $18,500 — usually more than every other deduction combined. The mileage guide covers the log requirements and the first-year method choice. **2. Tolls and parking.** Delivery zones downtown mean parking; some markets mean tolls. Receipts or the transponder statement, marked by business trip. **3. Delivery gear.** Insulated bags, the phone mount, chargers, a small cooler — the tool kit of the trade. Deductible in full as business supplies. **4. Phone share.** The phone navigates every order. Business-use percentage of the plan, consistent and defensible. **5. Car washes** — the business share, receipts kept. What never deducts: personal miles, the commute to your first zone, tickets, and — if using the standard mileage rate — your gas and repairs separately.
4. Tips: Taxable Now, and the New Deduction Usually Doesn't Apply
All tips are taxable income — in-app tips, cash tips, all of it. The headlines about the 2025 tips deduction raise the natural question. Can couriers claim it? Generally no. The deduction requires an occupation the IRS identifies as *customarily and regularly tipped*, defined by reference to W-2 tipped occupations. Self-employed taxpayers face additional limitations on top. Delivery-app tips have generally not been treated as meeting that definition. Watch for IRS guidance, but plan on your tips being fully taxable — and be wary of anyone selling you the tips deduction for gig work without pointing to current authority.
5. Self-Employment Tax: The Bill Rideshare Drivers Know
Every delivery dollar above expenses carries the 15.3% self-employment layer plus income tax. A courier grossing $28,000 with $12,000 of mileage and expenses owes real tax on the remaining $16,000 — the complete worked example shows the exact arithmetic, quarterly payments included. Owe $1,000 or more after withholding? Quarterly estimates are generally required: April 15, June 15, September 15, January 15. The Driver Plan includes the calculations; the free estimator previews the number first.
6. Multi-App Couriers
DoorDash plus Uber Eats plus Instacart: one Schedule C. The apps don't merge — your records do. Gross receipts are everything, from every app, reconciled against payout statements. The method is in how platform workers reconcile their 1099s.
7. The Records That Decide It
- Mileage log, kept at the time — the app tracker or your own - Pay statements saved monthly, per app - Receipts for gear, with a note on the business purpose - The business/personal split kept honest Bring those four things to your appointment and the return builds itself.
